Some days the other team is just better. Sunday was one of those days.

The Sea Lions walked onto the turf at Skokie having won every game they had played this season. They walked off with their first loss — against the toughest opponent they have faced all year. That stings. It is supposed to. A team that does not feel a loss like this one is not a team worth worrying about come playoff time. This one is worth feeling.

But here is what matters: how you carry it.

The Game

The opponent came in physical, organized, and ready. They had clearly prepared. The Sea Lions matched them early — competing on every play, fighting for every yard, refusing to fold when things got difficult in the first half. There were good plays. There were moments that, with a different bounce of the ball or a call that goes the other way, change the entire complexion of the afternoon. This team gave themselves chances.

The second half is where the lesson lives. When the scoreboard started to feel heavy, something shifted — not in effort, but in belief. The shoulders came down just a little. The eyes dropped just a little. And when that happens, the game gets harder, not easier. The opponent did not beat the Sea Lions in the second half as much as the Sea Lions let the scoreboard beat them.

That is the only thing to take from Sunday, and it is not a small thing. In the playoffs, belief is the difference. You have to pick each other up. You have to play for the girl next to you. When one of you is doubting, another one of you needs to be the one who pulls her back in.

This team knows how to do that. We have seen it all season.

And here is the other side of Sunday — the part that is actually encouraging. This loss put things on the table that five wins never could. It pressure-tested the defense, exposed the leaks, and showed the coaching staff exactly where the work needs to happen. That is genuinely useful. You cannot fix what you cannot see, and Sunday was a clear-eyed look at what to sharpen before the playoffs begin. The coaches already know what they need to do with two weeks of practice time.

What Does Not Change

Five wins. An undefeated regular season before Sunday. A group of eleven girls who came together this spring and built something real — a team that communicates, covers for each other, celebrates each other, and pushes each other to be better every single week.

One loss does not erase any of that.

The Sea Lions have been in close games. They have been down at halftime and come back. They have made big plays when big plays were needed. They have blocked, intercepted, reversed, double reversed, and Tsunami-ed their way through five wins. They know how to play this game.

The Sea Lions go into the playoffs at 5-1, with a clear view of what they can improve and every reason to believe they can win a championship. This is a good team with good coaches and two weeks to get sharper. That is a fine position to be in.

Sunday showed them something they needed to see. Now they know. Now there are no surprises.

Looking Ahead

Two weeks. That is all the time between now and playoff Saturday.

Practice on Friday May 29th. Games on Saturday May 30th — up to four of them. Championship on Sunday May 31st, if you go out there and take it.

This team is capable of winning a championship. Not in spite of Sunday — partly because of it. The hardest lessons are the ones that stick. What the Sea Lions do with this one is entirely up to them.

Show up Friday ready to work. Show up Saturday ready to play. Pick each other up every single time one of you needs it, because that is what has made this team special from the beginning.

The season is not over. Not even close.

Emi & Isabel

On a day when the scoreboard was not kind, Emi and Isabel were. Both competed hard from the first snap to the last, gave everything they had on every play, and never stopped fighting for their teammates. That kind of effort does not show up in the final score — but it is exactly what this team is going to need in the playoffs.

The sun had something to say on Sunday afternoon.

It came out for Mother's Day, bathing the field in the kind of light that makes everything feel a little more significant. The Sea Lions knew the assignment. Bring it home for the moms.

Captains Alice and Owyn stepped to the center of the field for the coin toss and emerged victorious in what has become the fiercest competition of any week — rock, paper, scissors. The Sea Lions elected to start on defense.

The First Half

They would not regret it.

On the very first play of the game, Caroline read the throw before it left the quarterback's hand, stepped into the passing lane, and walked away with the interception. One play in. Sea Lions' ball. Just like that, the tone was set.

The offense stepped onto the field and handed the script to Lucy, who has apparently decided that opening-play touchdowns are simply part of her routine. Forty yards. Untouched. What the highlight reel does not show is the wall of blocks that opened the lane for her — the whole team executed their assignments to near perfection on that play, and all week on Friday if we are being honest about it. Her fourth opening-drive score of the season has moved from remarkable to something approaching folklore. Sea Lions 6, Opponent 0.

The opposition found their footing on the next possession, stringing together a couple of solid runs and pushing the ball into the end zone. For the first time since Game 1, the Sea Lions found themselves looking up at the scoreboard. Opponent 8, Sea Lions 6.

If the other team thought a two-point lead would unsettle this group, they had the wrong team.

Alice had been watching their defense all afternoon, and she had seen exactly what she was looking for. On the very next possession, she ran the perfect reverse — cutting behind the line, hitting the edge, and finding open grass all the way to the end zone. The blocking downfield was exceptional, the kind of coordinated team effort that, as any coach will tell you, only comes from a really, really good Friday practice. And then, before the other team could exhale, the Sea Lions called the double reverse. Gwenyth took the handoff, turned the corner, and converted the two-point attempt. Sea Lions 14, Opponent 8.

With the first half winding down, the opponent came out pressing, looking to claw back the lead before halftime. Lu had other plans. She tracked down the ball carrier behind the line of scrimmage and put the first half to rest on her terms.

The Second Half

The Sea Lions opened the second half with a methodical, determined drive that moved the ball deep into opposing territory — only to come up just short of the goal line. Frustrating, but not deflating. This team does not deflate.

Owyn made sure of it on the very next play. She went up for a leaping interception on the opponent's first snap of their ensuing possession and brought the ball back to the offense with a full head of momentum.

What followed was exactly the kind of play that separates a good team from a great one. A pair of runs had the opposing defense creeping toward the line of scrimmage, convinced they had cracked the code. Gwenyth had a different read. She pulled up, found Addie on the back end of the route, and delivered a throw that Addie plucked cleanly out of the air. What happened next delighted everyone on the sideline — a twenty-yard run after the catch, weaving through the secondary and into the end zone. Sea Lions 20, Opponent 8.

Then things got a little chippy.

There comes a point in some games when the other team, feeling a result slipping away, decides the rulebook is more of a suggestion. That is not how the Sea Lions operate. Isabel left absolutely everything on the field, fighting for a flag pull short of the goal line in the kind of contested battle that tells you a lot about a player's character. And when she came off the field, it was Emi who was right there — helping her teammate up, carrying herself with the kind of composure and sportsmanship that made the coaches proud. Emi then proceeded to lead the team in multiple spirited renditions of "3-2-1 Spiderman" on the field and the sideline, which the crowd received enthusiastically.

The opponent scored. But when they pushed for more, Lu arrived in the secondary and swatted a pass clean out of the air before it could find its target. Sea Lions 20, Opponent 14.

The Finish

Three minutes on the clock. Alice and Caroline had seen something. They had watched the right side of the opposing defense all game, and they had a very clear, very specific, and very insistent message for the coaching staff: run it right.

Coaches, wisely, listened.

Two plays later, Alice was in the end zone — shepherded there by some of the sharpest blocking the Sea Lions have shown all season. Funny how that works, given what a tremendous Friday practice it was. The Sea Lions went for two. Adele took the handoff, made a sharp cut, and had daylight in front of her — right up until the opposing nose tackle, apparently having had quite enough of chasing flags to no avail, grabbed the back of Adele's jersey and pulled her to the ground. The officials, perhaps eager to get home to their own moms on Mother's Day, missed the call entirely. The Sea Lions won anyway.

Final score: Sea Lions 26, Opponent 14.

Five games. No losses. The moms went home happy.

Addie & Lu

Addie ran the offense with precision all afternoon and capped it with a touchdown catch-and-run that had the sideline on its feet. Lu was equally sharp at quarterback, and when the defense needed her, she delivered — recording tackles behind the line of scrimmage and ending the opponent's best second-half threat with a perfectly timed pass deflection.

The Sea Lions came to Skokie with one thing on their mind. Work to do.

Captains Emi and Lu set the tone before the first snap — composed, locked in, and ready. This team has developed a quiet confidence over four weeks, and it showed from the opening whistle.

The First Half

Fifteen seconds into the game, the scoreboard told you everything you needed to know. On the very first play, Lucy took the handoff and was in the end zone before most of the crowd had found their seats. Three games, three opening-play touchdowns. At this point it is less a coincidence and more a statement — this is what the Sea Lions do. Owyn found Caroline in the end zone for the extra point, and just like that, before the other team had touched the ball: Sea Lions 7, Opponent 0.

The defense answered immediately. Adele — continuing what is becoming a signature pattern of her own — stepped up on fourth down and pulled the flag. Clean, decisive, and efficient. The ball was back in Sea Lions hands.

The offense did not waste it. A long first-down run set the table, and then the double reverse was called. Alice took the handoff, made three defenders miss with a combination of patience and acceleration, and walked into the end zone. Sea Lions 13, Opponent 0.

The opponent answered with a score to trim it to 13-6, and for a moment they may have believed they were in a game. They were not.

On the next series, Owyn threaded a pass to Emi for a key first down that moved the chains and set the offense in scoring position. When the dust settled, Alice was in the end zone again — a TD throw from Owyn capping the drive cleanly. Sea Lions 19, Opponent 6.

The opponent spent the final minutes of the half chasing a score to swing the momentum. Olivia had other plans. She was everywhere in the secondary, making flag pull after flag pull and denying any first downs. The other team went into halftime empty-handed.

The Second Half

If the opponent had a halftime speech built around momentum, Gwenyth ended it on the opening play of the second half. She stepped in front of the pass, intercepted it, and handed the ball right back to the offense. Statement made.

What followed was a methodical drive. Isabel moved the chains with a solid run. Addie followed with another first down. And then Gwenyth — not content with just the interception — took the ball into the end zone herself. Sea Lions 25, Opponent 6.

After another defensive stop, it was time to call the Tsunami.

From the snap, a run-pass fake cleared the secondary. Caroline dropped back, scanned the field, and launched a throw that parents in the stands watched in something close to slow motion — the ball sailing over the defense in a high arc. Gwenyth ran under it, made the catch in stride, and was gone. Long touchdown. Complete. Sea Lions 31, Opponent 6.

Down four touchdowns, the opponent was given a favorable starting position by the officials. It made no difference. The defense held firm, gave up nothing, and closed out the half the same way it opened — with stops.

On the final drive of the game, Lu took the handoff, cut left, came back right, and turned upfield while threading the sideline in what appeared to everyone in attendance to be a clean touchdown run. The officials, perhaps feeling a measure of sympathy for the team on the wrong end of a 25-point deficit, flagged her out of bounds. The call was questionable. Lu's performance was not. She will get the next one.

Two quarterbacks. Two precision performances. Caroline and Owyn delivered consistent games at QB — critical completions, key first downs, and touchdowns when the offense needed them most. It was a windy day, and these two stepped up to the challenge.

The great debate started at breakfast.

Another sunny Friday practice had given way to a cold, windy, 45-degree Sunday, and somewhere between the orange juice and the syrup, the question was put on the table: defense wins championships — agree or disagree?

The Sea Lions considered it carefully, ordered more pancakes, and decided to let the game settle it.

The First Half

Captains Olivia and Lu led the team out with the same quiet intensity that has become this group's signature. The Sea Lions had the ball to open the game — as they have in all three contests now — and what happened next will surprise precisely none of the twelve devoted readers of this newsletter.

Lucy took the first handoff and turned a simple run into a twenty-yard statement. The field opened up, the defense had no answer, and the Sea Lions were in business. Two plays later, Alice took a perfectly executed reverse and walked into the end zone. Sea Lions 6, Opponent 0.

The opponent's first possession looked for all the world like it was heading nowhere. Adele had them bottled up early and the sideline was feeling good. Then something happened that the broadcasters on the scene were generously calling a "transportation trick" — their running back somehow weaved through six of the seven Sea Lions defenders on a fourth-down, thirty-yard touchdown run. It was, to put it plainly, impressive. The Sea Lions came off the field with a question hanging in the air.

Does defense really win championships?

Three minutes left in the half. Score tied 6–6. The offense had heard enough.

What followed was a three-play touchdown drive that answered the question temporarily but forcefully. Two long runs moved the ball into scoring position, and then Gwenyth — planting, cutting, and side-stepping with the confidence of someone who had rehearsed this exact moment — found the end zone. Sea Lions 13, Opponent 6.

In a moment that will be studied by future coaching seminars under the title "clock management: a cautionary tale," the opposition was left with a full minute and two timeouts to work with before halftime. The defense, unbothered, got to work. Owyn locked down the middle with the kind of physical authority that makes opposing coordinators go quiet. And when the opponent made one last desperate push, Addie stepped up and pulled the final flag of the half.

The Second Half

The opponent came out of their halftime huddle whispering about momentum shifts. They had that look. You know the one.

Caroline had a different look.

On the opponent's first possession of the second half, she read the play before it developed, stepped in front of the pass, caught the ball, and did not stop running until she was in the end zone. Pick six. Interception returned for a touchdown. Caroline had single-handedly ended whatever momentum conversation was happening on the other sideline before it even started.

What followed could only be described as a defensive performance that evoked memories of the 1985 Chicago Bears — minus, as one observer noted, the grown-men ugliness. The Sea Lions' defense was suffocating in every sense of the word. Lu stepped in front of a pass for the interception, Gwenyth and Olivia applied relentless pressure on every drive, and the opponent never found any rhythm at all.

The answer, it turns out, is defense. Defense wins championships.

The doubters were already talking.

One win, they said. One dramatic, wind-assisted, barely-scraped-out win. High school scouts had started quietly circling the Sea Lions, but the naysayers had their narrative ready — a fluke, a one-game wonder, a team that got lucky and had nowhere to go but down.

The Sea Lions had a different opinion.

The Buildup

Friday's practice told you everything you needed to know about this team's mentality. Seventy-five degrees, a field soaked through, and not a single Sea Lion who looked like she'd rather be somewhere else. They came out of it loose, confident, and ready.

Then Sunday arrived and mother nature — apparently a fan of dramatic storytelling — flipped the script entirely. Forty degrees, a light rain falling, and 4 PM looking nothing like the afternoon anyone had planned for. The conditions were miserable. The Sea Lions didn't seem to notice.

Captains Isabel and Adele led the team out. The tone was set before a single play was run.

The First Half

The Sea Lions took the ball and wasted absolutely no time. On the very first play of the game, Lucy did what Lucy does — took the handoff and simply refused to be stopped. Forty yards, weaving in and out of defenders with the kind of effortless, unstoppable speed that makes opposing coaches quietly reconsider their life choices. Touchdown. The Sea Lions went right back to the play that won them Game 1 — and this time Olivia found Alice in the end zone for the extra point. Sea Lions 7, Opponent 0.

The opposing team pushed back. Their next drive ended in what appeared to be a routine stop by Caroline, who pulled the flag cleanly before the end zone. The officials, apparently operating with their eyes trained on something other than the play, called it a touchdown anyway. A failed extra point kept the damage to a minimum. Sea Lions 7, Opponent 6.

Another quick score by the opposition — another missed extra point — and the score stood at 12 to 7. The Sea Lions were down. They were not worried. This team has a quiet, settled belief in each other that doesn't rattle easily, and it showed. They trusted the process, trusted their teammates, and trusted that if they played Sea Lions football, the results would take care of themselves.

They were right. Alice took over on the next series, making two big runs that culminated in the second touchdown of the game. Sea Lions 13, Opponent 12.

With the lead restored and halftime approaching, the opposing team tried to execute the classic "double up" — score just before the half, get the ball back to open the second half, and swing the momentum in one move. The Sea Lions had scouted this tendency. Lu and Adele, operating as what onlookers could only describe as a two-headed octopus, locked down the left side of the field with a relentless, reaching, inescapable defensive presence that left the opposition with nowhere to go. Desperate on fourth down, they attempted a reverse. Addie read it perfectly and pulled the flag.

The Second Half

If the first half was a statement, the second half was the exclamation point.

The dual quarterback threat of Isabel and Olivia took over on the opening drive and refused to let go. Seven plays. Patient, disciplined, precise. The drive looked like it might stall twice, but Owyn came up with a crucial fourth-down catch that kept it alive — the kind of play that doesn't show up in the box score the way it should, but that every person on the sideline knew was the moment that mattered.

Gwenyth then executed a reverse with the kind of timing and decisiveness that coaches dream about, moving the ball into scoring position. And then Olivia — surveying the field, finding her target through the rain — delivered a perfect pass to Isabel in the end zone.

Isabel caught it. Of course she did.

The rest of the afternoon belonged to the defense. The opposing team made one final push to get back in it, and the Sea Lions shut the door with the same calm authority they'd shown all game.

Touchdowns on offense. Relentless effort on defense. Alice was everywhere on Sunday, on both sides of the ball, for all forty minutes. In a game full of big performances, she was the one who never stopped making plays.

It started over pancakes.

The Sea Lions gathered at the Pancake House Sunday morning to talk strategy, diagram a few new plays, and load up on carbs for the battle ahead. By 9 AM the team broke with full bellies and clear minds locked on the objective. The mission was simple. Go to Northfield, play Sea Lions football, and come home with a win.

Mother Nature had other plans — or at least, other opinions. As 2 PM approached and game time arrived, the wind picked up over the New Trier turf as if to announce that this one would have to be earned.

The First Half

The Sea Lions opened with purpose. Gwenyth wasted no time making her presence felt, ripping off two long first-down runs on the opening drives to push the offense deep into opposing territory. The gains were real. The fight was real. But the end zone stayed out of reach, and the patented Sea Lions touchdown dance would have to wait.

The opposing team answered with back-to-back scoring drives to go up 13–0, and the Sea Lions found themselves in a hole with two minutes left in the first half. Lesser teams might have looked at the scoreboard and gone quiet. This one did not.

On their third drive, Alice took the first handoff and simply did not stop — 40 yards later the Sea Lions were in the end zone and the crowd woke up. The extra point attempt was stopped just short of the goal line, but the momentum had shifted and everyone on that sideline could feel it.

The opposing offense came back out with hunger in their eyes and a minute on the clock, eager to extend the lead before the half. Owyn had different ideas. She read the play, stepped in front of the pass, and picked it off — sending both teams to halftime at 13–6 and giving the Sea Lions exactly the jolt they needed.

The Second Half

The opening possessions of the second half have already been described by those in attendance as a defensive and flag-pulling clinic. Addie and Lu were everywhere — relentless, precise, and suffocating — forcing the opposition into stop after stop and slowly turning the tide. The momentum that had been leaning toward the other team was now tilting, then swinging, then fully in the hands of the Sea Lions.

With two minutes left in the fourth quarter, Lucy made sure there was no turning back. A long run down the field put the Sea Lions on the goal line with four downs to gain three yards. One point down. Everything on the line.

On the first play, Caroline read the defense perfectly, faked left with enough conviction to shift every defender that direction, and slipped into the right corner of the end zone. Sea Lions 12, Opponent 13. The extra point attempt — and the decision behind it — was still to come.

Go Big or Go Home

The huddle didn't take long. Neither did the conversation on the sideline. A two-point conversion for the win. That was the call, unanimous, no hesitation.

The pressure was as real as it gets in 4th Grade Girls Flag Football. But it was also exactly the kind of moment this team had wanted. Caroline took the snap, surveyed the field, found Olivia open in the back right corner of the end zone, and put the ball in the air over two defenders.

It looked, for a moment, like a routine catch.

Then the wind — the same wind that had been a nuisance all afternoon — took the ball slightly off its path at the last second. As if mother nature had been saving this moment all day.

What happened next will be talked about for a long time. Despite taking a significant hit to the mouth that drew blood, Olivia — with the poise and composure of a player well beyond her years — held on to the ball. Touchdown. Extra point. Sea Lions lead.
